Saturday, the Fifth Week of Lent – Melissa

[Jesus said], “and I, when I am lifted up from earth, will draw all people to myself.” – John 12:32

Children have a way of pointing out the habits much to their parent’s chagrin. Those moments can lead to embarrassing situations, hushed conversations, or insightful awareness.

One Mother’s Day when my girls were five and seven, they were so very excited for me to unwrap the gift they had picked out. I already owned the #1 Mom necklace and bracelet so this was truly a surprise. Upon opening I found a small wooden cross. My oldest quickly explained that I can keep it in my pocket so I wouldn’t play with my necklace anymore. She had observed that when I was in deep thought, concerned, worried, or very excited, I played with my cross necklace.

As written in our Lent devotion today, “The cross is the ultimate sign of hope.”  My unconscious mind recognized that as I sought comfort and hope by touching my necklace. As I see crosses as jewelry, on signs, and even in other’s  front lawns, I’m reminded of the glory that awaits.
