Tuesday, the Third Week of Lent – Bob

OPEN EARS

The early years of my broadcast career were spent in radio. The medium requires only one thing to be successful – listeners. I spent a lot of time wondering if people were really listening to the news I reported, the music we played, or especially the commercials, which paid the freight.

There’s no wondering whether God is listening. All day, everyday. Whether we say it or think it, God hears. Yes, God has ears! We may not grasp that at the moment, but we know through faith that whether our words petition the Father or simply praise Him, He hears.

But, are we listening with the same attentiveness for His answers? God does talk to us in his own way, whether it be through words we actually hear, visions we see, senses we experience. As powerful as God’s responses are, we can miss them when we are not listening.

One of my favorite television personalities is Judge Judy. She repeatedly admonishes her litigants: “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason.” Pretty easy to figure out why.

I like this medium, something to think about for next time Tom!

It’s truly amazing (and incomprehensible!) that God is listening to everyone of us all the time. That’s both humbling and gratifying – I’m not sure I wanted God to hear everything I’ve said in life…

At the end of morning prayer we may read the prayer of St Chrysostom, including the line “Fulfill now O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us, granting us in this world knowledge of your truth”. But, unless we listen to the answers we may never hear the truth.

Thanks for making me think through this Bob.
